Equipment

  • 1 Knife
  • 1 Spoon
  • 1 10" x 10" Baking dish with a 2" high rim

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji or Honeycrisp
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned oatmeal
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter cut into ¼" cubes
  • ¼ cup walnuts (optional), lightly toasted and chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ (180℃)
  • Combine oatmeal, butter, cinnamon and brown sugar in a medium bowl.
¾ cup old-fashioned oatmeal, ¼ cup light brown sugar, ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Using your hands, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until only small pieces of butter remain (about the size of a pea). Stir in walnuts if using.
¼ cup unsalted butter, ¼ cup walnuts (optional), lightly toasted and chopped
  • Use a paring knife or serrated spoon to carefully carve a wide, shallow well in the center of each apple. Be sure not to cut all the way through the bottom—this space will hold the filling.
    4 medium apples
  • Place apples in a rimmed baking dish.
  • Spoon ¼ of the oatmeal mixture into the well of each apple.
  • Bake for 20 minutes. The filling will be bubbling and lightly browned.
  • Cool for 20 to 30 minutes before serving.
