Ingredients

Gather the following ingredients to make these Mummy pretzel rods:

ingredients needed to make recipe including pretzels, white candy wafers and googly candy eyes
  • White candy wafers: use bright white candy melts to achieve the best color for the mummy 'bandages'
  • Pretzel rods: I used the 3 ½" Dipper Sticks made by Utz. Use a larger pretzel rod if you wish.
  • Googly eyes: use edible googly eyes
  • Optional: coconut or vegetable oil. The oil helps create a smoother consistency for dipping and drizzling candy wafers.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Step 1: Start by melting the white candy wafers. Follow manufacturers instructions for melting - usually listed on back of the bag. In short, following is how I melt candy wafers:

  • Place wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. I add 1 teaspoon coconut oil (this helps create a smoother consistency for dipping and drizzling).
  • Place bowl of candy wafers in microwave.
  • Heat in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring after each heating until smooth. Take care as candy wafers can easily burn and seize up.

  • Step 3: Place pretzels on a sheet pan or platter. Wait 15 minutes for candy wafers to solidify on pretzels.

  • Step 4: Transfer melted wafers to a pastry bag with a small piping tip. Gently reheat wafers if needed. Drizzle over pretzels in a random pattern to resemble a mummy's bandages. (Note: if you don't have a pastry bag you may drizzle with a spoon) Don't be concerned about 'over drizzle' - this is easily removed after the pretzels set.

  • Step 5: Add two googly eyes to each pretzel. Leave pretzels at room temperature and allow to dry (approximately 30 minutes) or place in refrigerator for 5 minutes. Remove mummy pretzels from tray. Knock off any over drizzle. Transfer to a serving dish.

Equipment

Gather the following equipment to make this Mummy Pretzel Rods recipe:

  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Rubber spatula
  • Pastry bag or tablespoon: for drizzling mummy 'bandages' on pretzels
  • Sheet pan or platter

Storage

Place fully set pretzels in an airtight container - if stacking pretzels, use parchment or wax paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together.

Store in a cool, dry place away from heat sources. If your room is warm, place the container of pretzels in your refrigerator.

Top Tip

Candy wafers can easily burn so it is best to melt them slowly and at a low temperature. Heat the wafers in 30 second bursts at 50% power, stirring after each interval. This helps avoid hotspots that can cause burning.
