Ingredients

Gather the following ingredients to make this Valentine's Day chocolate bark:

ingredients needed to make valentine's chocolate bark including almond bark, sprinkles and coconut oil
  • Almond bark -
    • Almond bark is a confectionery coating made primarily from vegetable fats, sugar, and flavoring (like vanilla or chocolate). It's often sold in blocks or chips in a variety of colors. Alternatively you may use candy melts.
    • I used pink, white, and chocolate-colored almond bark for my creation, but feel free to use any colors that match your preference or theme.
  • Edible decorations - use Valentine-themed sprinkles to decorate hearts while the bark is still melted.
  • Coconut oil - optional. I use coconut oil to create a smooth and flowable almond bark. Alternatively, vegetable oil works just as well.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Prepare pan

First, get a sheet pan ready by lining it with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Next, arrange heart-shaped cookie cutters on the pan. Make sure to use cookie cutters with flat bottoms; otherwise, the almond bark might leak out.

Melt almond bark

The next step is to melt the different colors of almond bark by following the instructions on the package. Usually, this involves placing the almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl and heating it in the microwave at 50% power for 20-second intervals. Stir thoroughly after each interval until the almond bark is completely melted. Once it's ready, pour the melted almond bark into pastry bags for easy use.

Equipment

Gather the following equipment before starting the Valentines chocolate bark recipe:

  • Microwave-safe bowls
  • Rubber spatula
  • Pastry bags - I prefer to use disposable pastry bags. You may also use tablespoons to pour almond bark into the cookie cutters.
  • Sheet pan -
  • Parchment paper - you may also use a silicone mat
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutters - use a variety of sizes for a little variation in your design
  • Toothpick - to create colorful swirls in the melted almond bark

Storage

Place the fully set Valentine's chocolate bark in an airtight container - if stacking the pieces, use parchment or wax paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together. Store in a cool, dry place away from heat sources. If your room is warm, place the container in your refrigerator for up to 1 week.

This treat does not stand up well to freezing.

Valentine's Day gifts

This Valentines chocolate bark makes for a homemade, thoughtful gift. Packaged in clear bags with pink ribbons or placed in a decorative box, it feels extra special and heartfelt.

Top Tip

  • Use cookie cutters with a flat bottom to ensure a smooth process. Warped cookie cutters can cause almond bark to leak out, leading to a mess and uneven results.
  • Be cautious when melting almond bark, as it can easily scorch or thicken, rendering it unusable.

FAQ

Does almond bar have almonds in it?

Despite the name, it typically doesn’t contain almonds unless added during preparation. It became popular for making "bark" candies, where nuts like almonds are mixed into or topped with the coating, giving rise to the term "almond bark." It is typically made of sugar, vegetable fats, and flavorings, often used as a substitute for real chocolate in recipes

Notes

Be cautious when melting almond bark as it can scorch easily if overheated or heated too quickly. To ensure the best results, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging closely. Using low and steady heat, whether in a microwave or on the stovetop, will help prevent burning and keep the texture smooth and ideal for dipping.
