Instructions

Pan preparation

The first step in preparing these football whoopie pies is to get your baking pans ready. Start by creating a template with football shapes, each about 2 ¼ inches long (or use my free downloadable template found here). Make sure to leave at least 1 ½ inches of space between each shape so they have room to spread while baking.

Next, line each baking pan with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, placing it over the template to guide your football shapes.

Football whoopie pies instructions

After preparing your pans, you’re ready to make football whoopie pies using cake mix. Just follow the easy steps below, and you’ll have a tasty treat to share with your friends and family!

mixing together football whoopie pies from cake mix in a bowl

01 - Place cake mix, instant pudding, eggs, vegetable oil and water in a large bowl. Stir until well combined (note: you may use a hand or stand mixer for this step). Transfer whoopie pie batter to a pastry bag fitted with a ¼" opening or cut a small hole in the bag.

06 - To create the football laces, pipe a straight line of marshmallow filling down the center of each whoopie pie. Next, pipe 4 to 5 short lines across the long line to complete the look. Note: Royal icing may also be used to create the design.

Variations on the football whoopie pies

These whoopie pies are made with a classic marshmallow filling, but you can easily switch things up to match your taste. Here are a few delicious options to try:

  • Chocolate Ganache - perfect for a rich and decadent flavor
  • Peanut Butter Cream - adds a salty-sweet twist
  • Cream Cheese Frosting - offers a tangy contrast

Storage

The filling for these football whoopie pies contains butter, so they should be refrigerated until you're ready to enjoy them. To store, place in an airtight container, and if you're stacking them, make sure to put sheets of parchment paper between each layer.

They can be stored in the fridge for up to five days, but keep in mind that they don't freeze well.

FAQ

Why are these treats called 'Whoopie Pies?'

It’s believed that when Amish farmers or kids discovered these sweet treats in their lunch pails, they’d shout, “Whoopie!” That joyful exclamation is how the dessert got its name. However, some say the treat actually comes from Maine. Check out this article and decide what you think!
