Hot chocolate bombs make it easy to prepare a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Simply drop the bomb into a mug, add hot milk, wait a few minutes, stir and watch it transform into a flavorful and creamy beverage.

Want to spice up the drink a little? Add a shot of alcohol to your drink. Consider Bailey's Irish cream, dark rum, chocolate liquor, etc...

Ingredients

ingredients needed to make hot chocolate bombs for valentine's day including hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, candy melts and decorations
  • Melting wafers: I use white Ghiradelli melting wafers but many other commercial brands are available. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions when heating the wafers as they can easily scorch.
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Decorations: I applied red and pink fondant hearts to the bombs. Other decorating ideas are: drizzle with pink candy melts, roll in sprinkles, etc...
  • Hot cocoa mix: You may use a pre-made mix from your grocery store or make your own. To make your own: sift together ¾ cup instant nonfat dry milk, ½ cup powdered sugar and ¼ cup Dutch processed cocoa.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

using a brush to paint first coat of white chocolate half spheres into a silicone mold

Heat candy melts per manufacturer's instructions. Paint a thin coat into the silicone molds. Place molds in the fridge for 10 minutes.

using a brush to paint second coat of white chocolate half spheres into a silicone mold

Paint a second coat of candy melts in the molds. Make sure to cover any thin spots. Place molds back in fridge for another 10 minutes.

Gently remove domes from the molds by pushing up gently from the bottom.

Fill six of the domes with 2 tablespoons cocoa mix and several mini marshmallows.

Use a warm pan to heat the edge of an empty dome until it just begins to melt. Immediately place it on a dome filled with the cocoa mixture. The melted edges should line up and create a bond between the two domes.

Serving

Place bomb in a mug; heat milk until steaming and slowly pour it over the bomb. Wait a few minutes then stir until melted. Note: check the temperature of the drink before serving to children to ensure it isn't overly hot.

Equipment

Equipment can have a big impact on how your bombs turn out. I recommend the following:

  • Flexible molds: A flexible silicone sphere mold works best for removing the bombs after the candy melts set. I recommend using a mold with a cavity diameter of approximately 2 ½"
  • Pastry brush: A silicone pastry brush works best.
  • Sheet pan or cake pan: Used to lightly melt the dome edges prior to assembling the hot chocolate bombs.

Storage

The Valentine's Hot Cocoa Bombs are fine stored at room temperature. If your home is warm (above 72° F) place the bombs in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

Top tip

Check the temperature of the drink after pouring the milk into the mug over the hot chocolate bomb. You don't want to serve to children if it is too hot - let the drink cool for several minutes if needed.

FAQ

Can I put candy melts in the microwave?

Yes. Follow the heating instructions on your bag of candy melts. Be sure to gently heat the candy melts and stir well between each heating. The melts have a tendency to scorch and you won't have a smooth, shiny finish on your hot chocolate bombs.

Equipment

  • 2 Half Sphere Silicone Molds 6 cavities each mold with a diameter 2.6"
  • 1 silicone pastry brush
  • Bowls, measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Hot cocoa mix
  • 10 ounce bag Candy melts color of your choice
  • 6 cups Milk, steaming hot note: one cup needed for each bomb
  • 18 Mini marshmallows
  • Decorations Optional

Instructions

Bomb shells

  • Pour candy melts into a heat-resistant bowl.
    10 ounce bag Candy melts
  • Place 1" of water in a saucepan and bring to a simmer.
  • Set bowl of candy melts over the simmering water. Note: bottom of the bowl should not be touching the water and the water should not be boiling.
  • Stir candy melts every few minutes until melted. Remove from heat.
  • Using a silicone pastry brush, paint the candy melts into the silicone molds. This is a thin coat - a second coat will be added after the first coat sets.
  • Place molds in refrigerator for 10 minutes or until candy melts are set.
  • Paint a second coat of candy melts in the molds. Make sure to cover any thin spots. Place molds back in refrigerator for another 10 minutes.
  • Remove domes from the mold by pushing up gently from the bottom. The dome should pop out. Note - use clean cotton or latex gloves to prevent fingerprints on domes.
  • Gently warm the bottom of a cake pan or baking sheet by placing it over low heat on the stove or using a kitchen torch.
  • Working with one at a time, take 6 of the chocolate domes and gently press the edge onto the warm surface just until it begins to soften. This melts away any rough or uneven edges, making the domes easier to seal later.
  • Spoon 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder into each of the 6 domes with the smoothed edges. Then, add a handful of mini marshmallows on top of the cocoa mix.
1 cup Hot cocoa mix, 18 Mini marshmallows
  • Place one unfilled chocolate dome onto the warm pan just until the edge begins to melt. Quickly press it onto a filled dome so the melted edges stick together and form a seal. Repeat this process with the remaining domes to complete your hot cocoa bombs.
  • Decorate as desired.
  • Place a hot cocoa bomb in a mug. Heat milk until it’s steaming, then slowly pour it over the bomb. Let it sit for a minute or two, allowing the chocolate to melt, then stir until fully combined. Note: Always check the temperature before serving to children to make sure it’s not too hot.
