What I love about this recipe

This recipe makes an ideal dessert to serve guests after dinner since they only take 15 minutes to bake. Also, you can make the apple crisp recipe during the day and place in the fridge. Simply pop these in the oven while the coffee is brewing. In no time your guests will have freshly baked apple crisp!

Ingredients

You need the following ingredients to make the individual apple crisp recipe:

ingredients needed to make apple crisp including apples, corn starch, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, oatmeal, butter and flour
  • Apples: I suggest using one or a mixture of the following apple types: Granny Smith, Honey Crisp or Fuji. All of these types are great apples for baking.
  • Brown sugar: use light or dark brown sugar. The sugar is used for both the apple filling and for the crisp topping.
  • Ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and salt
  • Oatmeal: use old-fashioned oats. Don't use quick cooking oats as these can result in a gummy topping.
  • Butter: use cold butter cut into small cubes. Using cold butter will make working it into the crisp topping easier.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Follow the instructions below for this easy apple crisp recipe:

ingredients combined in a bowl to make crisp topping

Combine oatmeal, butter, flour and cinnamon in a bowl. Using your fingers, work the butter into the other ingredients. Don't overwork - some small pieces of butter will remain (approximately the size of a pea).

apples chopped into small pieces on a cutting board

Wash and peel apples. Chop into small pieces approximately ⅓ of an inch.

heating apples in a saucepan with sugar and spices

Place apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg in a saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat until apples just begin to release their juices (approximately 3 - 4 minutes). Stir occasionally.

chopped apples in a saucepan with cornstarch added

Next, remove the pan from heat and stir in the corn starch until evenly distributed. Allow apples to cool for several minutes.

Bake at 375° F for 15 - 18 minutes. Tops will be golden brown and apple filling will be bubbling. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Variations

Want to change this recipe a bit to fit a specific diet or taste? Consider the following:

  • Gluten-free - replace the flour in the crisp topping with a gluten-free flour replacement
  • Tree Nuts - add ¼ cup of toasted walnuts or pecans to the apple filling
  • Vegetarian - replace the butter in the crisp topping with a vegan butter replacement

Equipment

You need the following items to make the individual apple crisp recipe:

  • Baking dishes: I use mini cast iron skillets for baking but you may also ramekins or mini pie pans.
  • Bowls, saucepan, heat-proof spatula, measuring spoons and cups.

Storage

These individual apple crisp are best served the day they are made. If you prefer to make the day before serving, place in an airtight container and store at room temperature.

This easy apple crisp does not stand up well to freezing. The crisp topping will become soggy when defrosting.

Top tip

Don't overwork the butter in the crisp topping. Rub the butter into the other ingredients using your fingertips until coarse pieces remain. You still have small chunks of butter - approximately the size of a pea.
